چکیده

Birthdays are always a time for introspection and, given the number of fingers humans generally have, a one hundredth birthday is especially so. Almost exactly a century ago, in April 1911, the laboratory run by Heike Kamerlingh Onnes at the University of Leiden discovered a sudden transition to zero resistance in high-purity mercury on cooling through 4.2 K. At the time, Onnes was basking in the glory of winning the race to liquefy helium (see ref. 1 and references therein) and was using this new phase of helium to study the behaviour of matter cooled to newly accessible, lower temperatures. The reason that Onnes was measuring the temperature-dependent electrical resistivity of mercury was to test the proposed ‘death of conductivity’ or ‘freezing out of carrier motion’ that had been proposed by Lord Kelvin as the fate of electrons when absolute zero was approached1. Mercury, given its high vapour pressure, allowed for purification via distillation. The sudden phase transition to an infinitely conducting state was an unimagined result. This first, surprising, appearance of superconductivity was a herald of things to come. Over the ensuing century superconductivity would continue to pop-up in what were thought to be extremely unexpected places, repeatedly: in organic compounds, in oxides, in magnetic compounds, in an overlooked boride and most recently in a whole family of FeAsand FeSe-based compounds. At this point it is sort of like the old Monty Python’s Flying Circus ‘Spanish Inquisition’ skit2,3, with everybody expecting superconductivity to appear more or less wherever it wants to (shown apocryphally in Fig. 1). The simple fact that researchers continue to be surprised by superconductivity’s appearances is evidence that we still do not have a firm grip on what is needed to give rise to this intriguing state. We just celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of the BCS (from Bardeen, Cooper and Schrieffer) theory, which explains

Barthesian Narrative Codes as a Technique for the Analysis of Attar’s ‘Sheikh San’an’

Abstract: Mystic literature (Irfān) in general and Sufi literature in particular has always been alluring to the scholars interestingly working in different fields from literary, religious, philosophical, historical to other fields which may have little in common. Among Sufi theologians, Farid ud-Din Attar Neishabouri is the one whom no one has ever been able to surpass in creating works which ...

Application of Carnahan-Starling-vdW-β Equation of State for Refrigerant Fluids

Herein, the application of Carnahan-Starling-vdW-β equation of state (EoS) for 13 refrigerant fluids was investigated. The EoS could predict the saturated liquid densities of these refrigerants over the temperature range of 100-400 K and pressures from zero up to187 MPa with the average absolute deviations of 2.66%. The accuracy of Carnahan-Starling-vdW-β EoS in liquid density prediction was al...

Admission Test and Pregnancy Outcome

Background: The admission test (AT) has been carried out for many years, but there are still debates about the prognostic value of the test. Therefore, we aimed to examine the value of the AT in predicting the adverse outcome in neonates. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 425 pregnant women with normal vaginal delivery were studied between2009 and 2014at Vali-e-Asr Hospital. Based on the r...

Superfluous Neuroscience Information Makes Explanations of Psychological Phenomena More Appealing

Does the presence of irrelevant neuroscience information make explanations of psychological phenomena more appealing? Do fMRI pictures further increase that allure? To help answer these questions, 385 college students in four experiments read brief descriptions of psychological phenomena, each one accompanied by an explanation of varying quality (good vs. circular) and followed by superfluous i...

Assuring Sustainable Economic Benefit for Farmers by Using Ground Water in Semi-Arid, Hard Rock Areas in India & the Role of UNESCO-IUGS-IGCP Project 523

Out of about 1.2 billion people in India, 68% people live on agriculture as their main occupation. Ground water is therefore an important resource which provides over 70% of rural drinking water supply and about 50% of water used for irrigation. Rains in Monsoon season from June to September, provide the main source of water but they last only for four months and the rest of the year is dry in ...
